This is my first ceramic diffuser and it's beautiful! 
The top comes off really easy. Be careful because it will break if dropped. You have a medium sized plastic area where the water and oil goes into. Only a few drops will do. You can use just one or mix a few together!

The lid on that lifts off to make it easier to put in the water and oil. There is a small silicone piece at the very top (whenever you put the ceramic top on, this piece fits right into the hole at the top). There is a line that has the word MAX next to it, don't fill with water past that line or it won't work properly. 
There are two buttons on the front with 3 circles in between. The left button is for the MIST. You can press once for 1 hour (bottom light), twice for 2 hours (middle light), and three times for 3 hours (top light). The circles in the middle will also light up as you do this. The button on the right is for the light. You can press once for the light to come on. If you press twice, it will come on and the light will slowly flash on and off. 
The instructions state to plug in after it's filled. I plug it in before I fill, so it doesn't cause any possible spills. I love that the highest option is 3 hours. I filled it to the max and have used it on 3 hours twice a day for at least 3-4 days and still have water left in it for continued use. You don't have to fill it up as much which is a plus. I love having it on during the day and then at night I will cut the light on. Makes a beautiful gift!
